Trip Summary

We will leave Henderson UMC on July 10th about 6 PM. We will travel by motor coach overnight to Tennessee. We will spend two hours white water rafting on the Ocoee river. We will then head to Washington DC. In DC, we will have a guided city tour, visit the Smithsonian’s, visit the Capital with Congressman Gohmert, participate in a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, eat at the Hard Rock, have a night monument tour around the Mall and visit the Air and Space Museum Hangar at Dulles Airport. We will then head to West Virginia for the Jamboree. On the way home we will visit Graceland and the Elvis Museum in Memphis before arriving home about 4 PM on July 25th at the Henderson UMC.

Elvis Trivia is Back

Elvis Trivia

Elvis Trivia is back by popular demand.

This week’s question:

Elvis used the initials TCB on many things, including one of his planes.

What do the initials T.C.B. stand for when Elvis uses them?

Be the first to respond with the right answer.

How We Got to This Point

You might not realize it, but planning for our council contingent has been going on since the fall of 2011. The leaders for the trip were picked and recruiting started in January of 2012. A Volunteer council Jamboree committee, led by David Bush, selected the volunteer leadership. The volunteer leaders determined the budget and the activities that we will participate in. Two different groups have visited the Summit sight. The most significant, was a shakedown crew that visited last summer and included our Assistant Scoutmaster Travis Tate. He has actually visited the site and participated in activities. Your leaders have been recruiting and planning for over a year, to insure that we have a full contingent of 100 scouts and scouters on this trip.

Despite 18 months of planning, it is still important that we all remain flexible. This is the first time a Jamboree has been held at this site and many things can’t be anticipated. We are operating on the best information we have, but, like the consent forms, some things will continue to get updated. So, keep an eye on your emails and the Jambo page. We will keep you up to date.

Closing Court of Honor

Upon our return to the First United Methodist Church of Henderson on July 25th , we will have a short Court of Honor. We plan to arrive about 4, so the court of honor will be from around 4:30 to 5 and then you will be dismissed. We will have a short slide show and make some special presentations. If you are interested in helping set up or can help provide some simple refreshments, please let Mr. Lindsey know. ([email protected] )

Guests for Dinner

The meals at Jamboree will be issued by Troop, not patrols. Breakfast and Supper will be prepared by a patrol for the entire troop and 2 or 3 guests from the sub-camp. In addition, if you would like to do an exchange with a patrol from another troop, that is an option. Your patrol eats with the other troop and one of their patrols eats with our troop. You can also invite a staff person to eat with us. Meals can be a great opportunity to get to know folks from around our country.

JAMBOREE GEAR HAS BEEN DELIVERED

Most of you should have your Jamboree duffle bag, backpack, patrol patches, hat, t-shirts, lodge flaps and 2 jamboree patches. Leadership patches, council strips and unit numbers will be mailed to you after June 21 (don’t panic if you don’t get them before the 26th or 27th.) If you have not picked up your stuff, look at the last newsletter and contact the leader that was delivering it to you. (Munoz in Longivew, Cook in the Far East, and Lindsey every place else-south and west.)

QR CODE ON LODGE FLAP

You will find a QR code on the back of your lodge flap. You can get a QR reader from the App store and scan it. You will then have access to a page that tells you everything you need to know about the patch. To the left you will see some of the information. The Manufacturer is also included and a picture of the patch.

IT GLOWS

If you have not checked out your jamboree contingent t-shirt, you are in for a surprise. Expose it to bright light and then take it into a dark closet. You will see that IT GLOWS. Pretty cool!!!

1. Expose to LIGHT

2. Take into the DARK

3. Be Amazed!

Elvis Trivia

Nathaniel Frisinger was the first to answer: What do the initials T.C.B. stand for when Elvis uses them? He correctly answered “TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS”

UNIFORM PATCH LOCATIONS

The first one is on page 11 of the pdf (it is page 25 of the guide)

The second on is on page 14 of the pdf (it is page 28 of the guide.)

We do not have “veteran bars” on the sleeve, so the unit numbers go up against the council strip. On the right sleeve all we should have is the patrol patch and the flag. If you are trained you can wear the trained patch. You should have your rank on the left pocket.

LAST MINUTE ISSUES

Scoutmaster Matt Lindsey will be out of the country with a group of students from SFA visiting Germany, Switzerland and Italy from June 20th to July 7th. If you have questions please contact Mr. Munoz or Mr. Cook. If you send Mr. Lindsey an email, it might not be answered promptly.

Closing Court of Honor

Please make plans to meet at the First United Methodist Church of Henderson at 5:30 on July 10, 2013. The bus will depart promptly at 7 PM. Time to Start Packing

It seems like our trip is still a long time off, but now is the time to start getting your gear together. If you see you need something you still have plenty of time to order it our go shopping. Don’t forget, everything you take needs to be labeled. It needs your name and our unit number.

If you have decided to get a new pair of hiking boots for this trip, you also need to start breaking them in. You will not be happy if our first day in Washington DC is the first time you wore your new hiking books. You will be glad you have good boots while walking around the Jamboree site, but they need to worn some before you go.

Personal First Aid kit and Mess kit: I just wanted to remind you as well, that you need to carry a very small personal first aid kit with you daily. You might include things like sunscreen, mole skin, a band aid, a dose of Tylenol, etc.. You will also need to bring your own labeled plate, utensils and drinking cup for meals.

Special Delivery

The deadline has now passed for ordering our council Jamboree patches and extra shirts and hats, so the orders have been placed. In a couple of weeks we should have them and will get all the gear sorted and ready to hand out. We think this date will be June 15th. If the date holds we will set up some delivery points. The main delivery point will be at the council office around noon on the 15th. We will also make plans for additional locations near Longview, Carthage, Palestine and Lufkin/Nacogdoches either later on the 15th or the afternoon of the 16th. If someone from the Palestine area could volunteer to pick up the Palestine area supplies and distribute, it would help out tremendously. Mr. Munoz is planning on distributing Longview area supplies from the Troop 201 scout house Saturday evening around 7 PM. Stay tuned for more details in the next week or so.

The Time for sitting around is almost over

GO BIG. GET WILD.

IN 45 DAYS!

In this issue:

The Hard Rock, the Dashboard, Navy Seal Challenge, Hometown news, and more.

The HARDROCK CAFÉ Washington DC

Our paths to Washington DC and Graceland cross at the Hardrock Café. They have Elvis’ DEA jumpsuit that was presented to him by President Nixon at the White House just down the street. In addition to a great meal, you will get to see memorabilia from Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, The Doors, The Supremes, a letter from Bill Clinton to Ray Charles, Mick Jagger/Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy. (If you don’t know these people, look them up.)

If you look at the web page, you will see they have some special Girl Scout pins as collector items. One has a Samoa and a tag-along cookie guitar on a pin. Even if it is the girl scouts, you got to like a cookie shaped guitar.

The café is across the street from Ford’s Theatre. Be the first to respond and let us know what famous event happened in Ford’s Theatre for a special recognition.

HAVE A GREAT AND SAFE MEMORIAL DAY

I hope all of you have an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day Weekend. Sometime over the weekend, please don’t forget to take a moment and remember all of those people that have given the ultimate sacrifice to our country. While it is much easier to remember these folks when we are standing in front a marble wall or inside 7 acres of columns in Washington DC, it is just as important on a weekend like this.

Last call for Patches (and shirts and hats)

The deadline is upon us for preordering Restricted and Trader Council Strip patches, and extra Jambo Contingent t-shirts and hats. The form will be sent with this email if you still need it.

The Good Times have just started…

Again, thanks to all for having a positive attitude and participating in all the activities at the shakedown. Just remember, you have not seen anything, yet. Here are a couple of pictures I forgot to include last time…

They are still adding new events and activities to the jamboree. The Summit Seal Challenge was just announced with the Navy Seals. Keep an eye on the Summit Homepage for all the latest and greatest information.

SHAKEDOWN RECAP…

It was great to have cool weather for a May campout at Pirtle. Everyone seemed to have a great time with all the activities. Mr. Hightower’s patch trading 101 class was very popular and I hoped you found it interesting. The gear list that was given to the parents at the parents meeting is at the end of today’s newsletter. If you have turned in your health form and insurance card, you do not need to do anything else. We will scan them and save them. We will be contacting you individually if we are missing documentation from you.

This is your last chance to sign up for your high adventure jambo activity on the dashboard. Also, the status of most people is around 50%, so don’t panic about that.

Lost and left items: Mr. Munoz has a scout shirt and a hoody. Mr. Lindsey has Andrew W’s rubber bowl and someone’s Chisos bandanna.

The troop youth leadership did a great job this weekend and we are looking forward to working with you this summer. We would also like to thank all the scouts that have stepped up and volunteered to serve as Assistant Patrol Leaders and as Patrol and Troop Chaplains.

Patrol Leader Spotlight- The Pine Tree Patrol

The patrol leader of the Pine Tree Patrol for Troop A318 is Joseph Clark. Joe is a home schooled Life scout from Lufkin, TX. He will be following in the footsteps this summer of his older brothers who attended previous National Scout Jamborees. Joseph has two nameless cats and watches over his neighbor’s pet deer that likes spending time in Joe’s yard. Despite being flatfooted, Joe’s favorite scout activity is hiking. He collects coins, cool stamps and spoof patches. Joe is the Tall Timbers OA Chapter Vice Chief of Administration and the Senior Patrol leader for Troop 518 in Lufkin, TX. He would appreciate it if no one else would answer the Elvis Trivia question so he could provide the first correct answer this week.

Elvis Trivia

Last week’s winner of Elvis Trivia was Thomas Ghiringhelli. Thomas correctly identified Love Me Tender as the name of Elvis’ first movie.

NEW QUESTION: We will be visiting Graceland, the mansion that Elvis bought in Memphis, TN, however he was not born in Memphis. What is the name of the town that Elvis was born in?

Bonus Trivia: What was the name of Elvis’ twin brother that died during childbirth?

Be the first to email your correct answer to [email protected] for recognition in the next newsletter.

Featured Activity- Washington DC Night Monument Tour

During our nights in Washington we will tour the capital one night and take an evening monument tour on the other night. Below I have listed many of the monuments on or near the National Mall. Some are big major monuments and some are small and hard to find. It is worth reading about these and knowing a little bit about the people they memorialize. If you have a relative or family friend that was killed in Vietnam we can look the name up and find it on the wall. So take a minute and read about some of these great landmarks.

• African American Civil War Memorial

• Constitution Gardens

• District of Columbia War Memorial

• East Potomac Park

• Ford's Theatre National Historic Site and the House Where Lincoln Died

• Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

• Hispanic Heroes on Virginia Avenue, NW:

• Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II

• Korean War Veterans Memorial

• Lincoln Memorial

• Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

• National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial

• Old Post Office Tower

• Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site and Park

• Thomas Jefferson Memorial

• Vietnam Veterans Memorial

• Washington Monument

• West Potomac Park

• World War II Memorial

Do some research on each of these and when we arrive you can say:

“Did you know the 56 columns that ring the World War II Memorial list the U.S. states and territories involved in the conflict and they are arranged in the order in which they joined the Union, alternating from one side to the other?”

Notes on Jamboree Uniform:

During travel to and from the National Jamboree and while touring Washington, DC and the surrounding sites, each Scout and Venturer shall be required to wear a complete, Scout/Venturer Field (Class “A”) uniform. While at the National Jamboree, Scout Activity (Class “B”) uniform will be permitted.

National Jamboree Class “A” uniform insignia shall include the restricted Contingent Jamboree Shoulder Patch with the Troop/Crew number to be sewn at the top of the left sleeve of your uniform. If you have a Troop or Crew leadership position, your position patch should be sewn just below the Troop/Crew number. If you have completed the appropriate youth leadership training, you may also wear the “Trained” patch on your left sleeve just below your leadership position patch. On the right sleeve of your Field (Class “A”) uniform you must have the American Flag and, if you are a member of one of the two Troops, your Jamboree Troop Patrol emblem (unless you are the SPL, ASPL, Scribe or QM). Although, our two Jamboree Troops and Venture Crew members are the highest quality, the Journey to Excellence patch is not appropriate for your Jamboree Field (Class “A”) uniform as we are a contingent Troop and Crew and cannot satisfy the Journey to Excellence requirements.

On the front of the Field (Class “A”) Uniform Shirt, each scout/venturer should have his current rank patch on the left pocket with the World Crest above the left pocket. If earned, the arrow of light patch may be worn below the rank patch. The religious emblem square knot may be worn above the left pocket flap if earned. The 2013 National Jamboree patch goes above the right pocket. If you are a member of the OA and your dues are current, you can wear an OA Lodge Flap. When sewing the National Jamboree patch above the right pocket, make certain to place it high enough so that your name badge will fit between it and your OA Lodge Flap if you are a member of the OA. If you are not wearing an OA lodge flap, your Jamboree Name Badge is placed centered on the right pocket flap.

Each Scout will receive a name badge for the National Jamboree shortly before departure or at the Jamboree.

Do not bring or wear merit badge sashes or non-Scout T-shirts.

Suggestions to Pack in Carry-on Day Pack:

□ Lightweight Jacket or windbreaker

□ Packable pillow (small) (optional)

□ Shower Kit

□ 1 change of underclothes (underwear, t-shirt and socks)

□ Rain-gear

□ Camera

□ Notebook and pen

□ Paperback book for downtime and time on the bus

□ Bottle of water

□ Swim wear for white water rafting (with water-proof bag to store wet clothes)

□ Towel for an after-rafting shower

□ Sunscreen

□ Hand Sanitizer

E.T.A.C. JAMBO TROOP A318

Volume 1, Issue 6 APRIL 24, 2013 February 2013

Troop A318 Recap and Frequently Asked Questions

If you have not looked at the calendar lately, you might have missed the fact that the Jamboree is only about 80 days away. While that is enough time for Phileas Fogg to go around the world it is not much time for us. It would not be a bad plan at this point to review some of the past newsletters and double check the details, but I also want to reiterate some points that I have been asked lately.

Mandatory May 3rd and 4th Shakedown: The shakedown will be at Pirtle starting at 7 PM on Friday night and ending Saturday about 4. We have a parents meeting planned for 2 on Saturday. You need to bring your own camping gear (sleeping bag, tent, clothes, etc..) and eat supper before you arrive on Friday night. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided. You should arrive in your scout uniform and plan to wear a scout t-shirt for most activities with scout pants or shorts. (We will not have the June 8th shakedown event.)

Uniform for Jamboree: You need at least 2, but preferably 3 complete scout uniforms for Jambo. We will provide jamboree patch, council strips, unit numbers, patrol patch and position patches. If you are a “dues paid” OA member, you can purchase the Jambo OA flap. You need to add your own rank badge and religious emblems/square knots. I am recommending at least one pair of long pants (they can be zip offs) for some of the activities. The only thing you can wear is a scout shirt or a jamboree t-shirt. You also need scout socks. (You don’t need scout underwear.) You can order them from the scout office before May1 and get a discount. This is a great opportunity, so don’t miss it.

General Information: If any of your contact information changes, you need to update it on the Jamboree web page and let us know.

Curriculum Sign up: The deadline for curriculum event sign up is almost on us. If you have not provided your preferences, go to the dashboard and do it ASAP. You will not have a choice after May 15.

Needed information: If you have not sent in your health form yet, it needs to be sent to National ASAP. You also need to send Mr. Lindsey a copy or email it with your insurance card. If you did not include a copy of your insurance card, you need to send that as well.

Order extra stuff: Now is the time to order trading patches, t-shirts, hats or whatever extra things you might want. The deadline will be here soon. The order form was with the last newsletter and emailed directly to you a few weeks ago.

Jambo supplies delivery: We will deliver your backpack, duffle bag, hat, t-shirts and patches in June. (You will need to pick your uniforms up yourself if you order them from council.) Right now it looks like we will have the stuff ready to pick up after June 15th. We will let you know the details later.

Departure Information: We are close to confirming the exact time and location of our departure on July 10th, so stay tuned.

Label your gear: Be sure and put your name and unit on all your stuff.

Jamboree Council Strip

Each scout will also get 2 “trader” and 3 “contingent only” or “restricted” patches. You can preorder as many “trader” and “restricted” patches as you want for $2 each. The order form has been included on the last page of the newsletter. One of the most common statements at the 2010 Jamboree was “I wish I had ordered more trader council strips.” So, don’t be left out and order today.

LODGE FLAPS: You must be dues paid member in good standing of the Tejas Lodge to be able to purchase Tejas Lodge Flaps. The Jamboree Armadillo Bowling Lodge Flap will be available from the Lodge for $4 each. If you did not preorder at the troop meeting you can mail me your order and your money ASAP.

Patrol Leader Spotlight- VIKING PATROL

The patrol leader of the Viking Patrol for Troop A318 is Paul “Opie” Cook from Carthage, Texas. Paul is a Life scout in Troop 268. He attends Panola Early College High School. If you are looking for Paul, follow the music. He plays the Cello, Bass guitar, piano and rocks out on the drums. When he is not taking care of Snowball his West Highland white terrier you might find him playing ping pong with friends or playing video games. Paul attended the 2010 Jamboree and will be attending the 2013 Jamboree with his dad, Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Cook.

Washington D.C. Focus- The Capitol

During one evening of our stay in Washington D.C. we will get a “night” after hours tour of the Capitol, hopefully with our congressman, Louie Gohmert who represents the 1st District. The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met there for more than 200 years. Construction started in 1793, and since then the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored. Congressman Gohmert or a member of his staff will give us a memorable evening in this historic place. You can find out all about it at http://www.visitthecapitol.gov/

Jamboree Shakedown

Our council wide Jamboree Shakedown will be May 3 and 4th and Camp Pirtle. Make plans to arrive at 6:30 PM on Friday night May 3rd. You will need to bring your own tent and sleeping bag and general camping gear. At 2 P. M. on Saturday May 4th we will have a parents meeting and at its conclusion you will be dismissed (around 3:30). Breakfast and Lunch will be provided. We will also be sending out 2 more forms (West Virginia parental release and rafting parental release) that you will need to bring to the shakedown. We will send them when we get them.

Be sure and bring your Patrol Flag and be prepared to do your Patrol yell.

Phone Charging Options

A couple of different scouts and parents have brought the devices to our attention. You might want to consider a battery “back up” system to charge your cell phone. You can charge the battery at the charging station and then bring it to camp and charge your phone at night. It appears that many of the battery backup chargers will provide 2 or 3 charges for your phone. You will need to experiment and find an option that works for you.

One option

Last Chance for Curriculum Event sign up

Access your dashboard on the National Web Page before May 15, to select your curriculum events. (https://summit.scouting.org) This is your chance to pick the event that you want to spend a half day learning about in depth. It is my understanding that you have a very good chance of getting your first 2 or 3 choices. (Remember, we are rafting on the way up, so you really don’t need to spend $50 to raft again at the Jamboree.)

Health Form VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU DID NOT TURN IT IN

Please send in your health form ASAP if you did not turn it in at the Troop meeting. Access the National Jamboree Web Page at https://summit.scouting.org and log in, then access your Dashboard to find your Medical Form. YOU MUST USE THE LINK IN YOUR DASHBOARD TO ACCESS YOUR FORM, not a generic BSA form. At this point you need to send a copy to the National office (the directions are on the form) and to Matt Lindsey either by mail or email.

E.T.A.C. JAMBO TROOP A318

Volume 1, Issue 5 APRIL 14, 2013 February 2013

Troop A318 Meeting Review

Thank you for attending the Troop meeting last Sunday. We had great attendance and got the things done that needed to be accomplished. It was exciting to finally get to see what our unit looks like and feel the excitement about our adventure. Here are a few key points to remember:

1. If you did not turn in your Health Form, please complete it on the dashboard and send a copy to Matt Lindsey and to National.

2. If you are a dues paid Tejas Lodge member and want to preorder Jambo Lodge Flaps you can from Matt Lindsey or Bob Berry for $4.

3. If you want to order extra Council Strips, ETAC Jambo t-shirts or hats, do that with the council office soon.

4. If you need to correct any contact information, please email [email protected]

5. The patrols are formed. We will be telling you about our Patrol leaders and patrols in the coming weeks.

6. Shirts, hats, patches, duffles, etc.. will be delivered at a Troop meeting TBS (probably in June.)

7. The JUNE shakedown set for June 8 has been cancelled.

8. Please send in or provide anything you did not get turned in (like copies of insurance cards.)

Jamboree Council Strip

The form to order Jamboree Council strips is now available. It was emailed to everyone on Tuesday 4/9. Each scout will get 3 restricted Council Strips reserved for members of the contingent units (distinguished by a different border). Each scout will also get 2 “trader” patches. You can preorder as many “trader” and restricted patches as you want for $2 each. If you do not preorder a limited number will be available from council later, but at a much higher price. Check your email for the order form from a few days ago.

LODGE FLAPS: You must be dues paid member in good standing of the Tejas Lodge to be able to purchase Tejas Lodge Flaps. Lodge Flaps will be available from the Lodge for $4 each. If you did not preorder at the troop meeting you can mail me

Patrol Formation

During our troop meeting the four patrols came up with names. We now have the Viking Patrol led by Paul Cook, the Pine Tree Patrol led by Joseph Clark , the Wolves led by William Milawski , and the Enders Dragons Patrol led by Aaron Jackson. Be sure and keep working on a yell and a flag for your patrol. Patrol Flags are a big deal at Jambo, so you want a good one.

Washington D.C. Focus

During our visit to Washington D.C. we will visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport on the way to West Virginia. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. The building opened in December, 2003, and provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited at the Museum in Washington, DC. The two sites together showcase the largest collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world. Among the aviation artifacts on display are the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet in the world; the Boeing Dash 80, the prototype of the 707; the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay; and the deHavilland Chipmunk aerobatic airplane. The centerpiece of the space hangar is the Space Shuttle Discovery. Check it out at http://airandspace.si.edu/udvarhazy

Jamboree Shakedown

Our council wide Jamboree Shakedown will be May 3 and 4th and Camp Pirtle. Make plans to arrive by 7 PM on Friday night May 3rd. You will need to bring your own tent and sleeping bag. At 2 P. M. on Saturday May 4th we will have a parents meeting and at its conclusion you will be dismissed (around 3:30). Breakfast and Lunch will be provided.

Be sure and bring your Patrol Flag and be prepared to do your Patrol yell.

Chaplains needed

Each patrol needs a Chaplain and the troop needs a chaplain (can be one of the patrol chaplains.) So if you are interested in being a chaplain please let Mr. Lindsey or your patrol leader know.

2013jamboree-baghttp://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2013/02/07/these-are-your-2013-jamboree-duffel-bags/

Your jamboree fee includes a standard issue Jamboree Duffel Bag made by Osprey. It is 32” by 18” by 16” and holds about 115 liters with three compartments, backpack straps and a Jamboree patch. Everything that you plan on getting off the bus with must fit in the duffel bag. Participants will not be allowed to have any other bags, besides a small backpack. Your cot and tent will be on site, so they do not have to fit in the bag. However, all your clothes, sleeping bag, gear and other items must fit in the duffel bag. (My Philmont backpack holds 70 liters is 40% smaller than this duffel bag.)

Discounted Payment Deadline is APRIL 1st

The cost for this event will be $2400, however if you stay current on payments and have your final payment made by April 1, 2013, your cost will be $2100. Washington D.C. Focus

During our visit to Washington D.C. we will visit Arlington National Cemetery. During our visit to Arlington our youth leaders will have the opportunity to participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. This will no doubt be one of the highlights of your visit to Washington. This is a unique opportunity and all visitors do not get this experience. We will also get to witness the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb.

E.T.A.C. JAMBO TROOP A318

Volume 1, Issue 3 March 6, 2013 February 2013

Travel Plans for ETAC Contingent Units

This issue will review the basic outline for our trip. We will depart from one of two Gateway Cities (probably Tyler and maybe Lufkin) on Wednesday July 10, 2013 probably around 3 PM. We will drive overnight on the bus and go rafting in Tennessee on Thursday. After the rafting trip it is off to Washington DC for 3 days. We will tour DC; visit the Smithsonian, the capital and Arlington on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, we head to West Virginia. We will arrive at the Summit early on Monday July 15th to start the Jamboree. The jamboree will go from July 15 to July 24. On the 24th we will depart West Virginia and head to Memphis, TN. We will visit Graceland and stay at the Elvis Heartbreak Hotel in Memphis. Thursday morning, July 25th, we will return to the gateway city that we departed from.

ETAC Trip Duration: Wednesday July 10th to Thursday July 25th, 2013

We will highlight specific activities over the next few months, but generally we will have 3 days on the ground in Washington DC. We will start with a 2 hour guided city tour on Thursday and then have several hours to explore the Mall area in small groups. We will do a night time monument tour and a nighttime capital tour. Our contingent will get to participate in a wreath ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. We will conclude our Washington activities by visiting the Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport on our way out of town. We will review some typical Jamboree activities as well in the next few weeks in our newsletters including the arena shows and other special events we will get to participate in at Jambo.

Uniforms for Jamboree-

Each scout is required to have at least 2 full uniforms, with patches, but 3 are strongly recommended. Any official BSA uniform is acceptable, but the centennial uniform is recommended. I am recommending 2 pairs of switchback (http://www.scoutstuff.org/youth-polyester-microfiber-switchbackstm.html) pants and one pair of the centennial water shorts (http://www.scoutstuff.org/bsa/uniforms-insignia/youth/shorts/youth-centennial-uniform-shorts.html) . I would get the Microfiber Short-sleeve shirt. (http://www.scoutstuff.org/youth-polyester-microfiber-short-sleeve-shirt.html).

Smartphones at Jamboree-

We are still getting details, but smartphone apps will be a key element to participation at the Jamboree. For scouts without smartphone, some type of rental device is supposed to be available. They are working on the logistics of keeping 30,000 charged. Electric outlets WILL NOT be available at camp. The summit site is recommending having a battery pack to charge up and use to recharge your phone at night. AT&T is providing the cell service for the shindig.

Payment Information- Save $300

The cost for this event will be $2400, however if you stay current on payments and have your final payment made by April 1, 2013, your cost will be $2100. The final payment is due on June 1 if you have not stayed current. Contact the council office if you have questions. The council will not officially admit you to our unit until you have paid $1000 and turned in all paperwork. At that point you will have access to troop items on the national dashboard.

Youth Leadership: Youth Leaders

Stay tuned to find out about your youth leadership. If you are interested in another youth position (ASPL, Scribe, Quartermaster, Patrol Leader or APL) please send Matt Lindsey an email at [email protected] and express your interest.

Important Dates

Between now and the Jamboree we are planning at least three additional events. On Sunday April 7th at 2 PM we are planning a Troop meeting. We are working on having the meeting on the Stephen F. Austin University Campus so we can complete the swim checks for our Troop. So, right now the plan is to meet in Nacogdoches at SFA, but it is still tentative. More information next newsletter.

Two shakedowns (preparation weekends) are on the schedule for the weekend of May 4th and June 8th. We are still working on the agenda for these events and let you know as the plans firm up and we see what additional items need to be covered.

It is possible, that once patrols are formed the patrol members might decide to meet to build patrol flags or discuss patrol organization.

Access your dashboard on the National Web Page before April 1, to select your curriculum events. (https://summit.scouting.org)

Health Form

Access the National Jamboree Web Page at https://summit.scouting.org and log in, then access your Dashboard to find your Medical Form. YOU MUST USE THE LINK IN YOUR DASHBOARD TO ACCESS YOUR FORM, not a generic BSA form. Please bring a copy to the Troop meeting or email to [email protected]

Keep Recruiting

E.T.A.C. JAMBO TROOP A318

Volume 1, Issue 2 February 20, 2013 February 2013

Welcome to Troop 688, I mean Troop A318

National has recently informed us that our Troop designation will change to A318. We think that means we will be in Village A, by the Consol Energy Bridge near the entrance to Adventure Valley, but things are changing rapidly, so you never know. Our sister Troop is now D425 and the crew is numberless. As you might guess, the D designation locates them in village D. This is a radical change from the past, when troops from the same council camped near each other and Councils from the same region got grouped together. At the summit, troop location will be similar to the world jamboree and sister units will not be in the same area. That means we might have neighbors on one side from Oregon and other neighbors from Alabama and Vermont. It should be interesting. You might want to bring a Texas Language Translator.

Payment Information- Save $300

The cost for this event will be $2400, however if you stay current on payments and have your final payment made by April 1, 2013, your cost will be $2100. The final payment is due on June 1 if you have not stayed current. As of February 1, you should have paid $1800. If you have questions about your balance, contact the council office.

Youth Leadership: Senior Patrol Leader

The Senior Patrol Leader for Troop A318 will be Buddy Andersen. Buddy (and yes, that is his name) is a Life Scout with Troop 333 in Tyler, but he plans to have his Eagle completed very soon. He is a Sophomore at Bishop T.K. Gorman High School and he plays the baritone in the band. He plans to go to the University of Michigan. Buddy plays on the tennis team at Gorman and enjoys playing British bulldog in scouts. Buddy has been in Scouting since Cub Scouts. This past summer he went to Philmont to complete the Triple Crown of High Adventure Bases. The trip to the Northern Tier was his favorite trip. Visiting the Bechtel Summit this summer will give him the high adventure grand slam. He has staffed NYLT twice and plans to be the course leader at winter camp 2013. At the Jamboree, Buddy is looking forward to the rock climbing and white water rafting.

Other Youth Leadership Positions

If you are interested in another youth position (ASPL, Sribe, Quartermaster, Patrol Leader or APL) please send Matt Lindsey an email at [email protected] and express your interest.

Two shakedowns are on the schedule for the weekend of May 4th and June 8th.

A couple of spots are still available if you have a buddy that wants to go.

Featured Contingent Activity- Rafting

On the way to Jamboree our contingent’s first fun activity will be a river rafting trip on a scenic river, probably the Ocoee in Tennessee. We are still working on final arrangements, but this link shows a typical rafting adventure under consideration: http://www.cascadeoutdoors.com/ Tennessee's Ocoee River flows from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers some of the finest whitewater in the world. The Ocoee River is the home of the whitewater slalom events in the 1996 summer Olympics so it’ll be sure to challenge you. This event is covered in your Jamboree fee with our contingent. Rafting is an optional activity at Jamboree with a surcharge of $50. Our river trip will be very similar to the one offered at the Summit. You can still sign up for the Jambo rafting trip, but you will have a great opportunity before we arrive.

Activities at the Jamboree- Curriculum vs Elective Events

Right now, you can go to the Jamboree Dashboard and sign up for a special Curriculum event. That will be your chance at an in depth training session and opportunity to participate in a great activity.

CURRICULUM High Adventure program elements offered in the High Adventure Areas and will be designed in 3-4 hour sessions. Each participant will be able to select ONE high adventure curriculum choice IN ADVANCE. We anticipate that there will be approximately 45,000 available curriculum “choices” for our approximately 30,000 youth participants. Therefore, most youth should get one of their top five curriculum choices.

ELECTIVE program activities are like those offered at recent past jamborees. The participant simply shows up at the program venue, gets in line, waits for some period of time and does the activity. The actual time spent doing the activity is relatively short – sometimes only a few minutes, perhaps 15 or 20 minutes on some activities. When complete, the participant either gets back in line for another turn or goes on to a different activity. At The Summit, there will be many different ELECTIVE activities in the various program venues. Participants will have plenty of unscheduled time (“free time”) to visit the various program areas and do those ELECTIVE activities which interest them.

CURRICULUM program activities are new for the jamboree model. Each participant will have the opportunity to experience ONE (1) CURRICULUM activity during the jamboree on a pre-scheduled basis. Staff conducting the CURRICULUM activities will employ the EDGE method wherever and whenever possible so that the participant not only has fun, but also increases their level of skill. CURRICULUM activities will vary in duration at each program venue, but will typically last at least two hours and some as much as four hours. When complete, the participant may stay at that program venue and participate in ELECTIVE activities.

OFFSITE OPTIONAL program activities are also new for the jamboree model. There will be two (2) of these activities available as part of The Summit 2013 National Jamboree – Whitewater Rafting on the New River and Technical Climbing in the New River Gorge. These will be provided by professional outfitters operating in the local area who have been contracted by the BSA to provide these activities. If a participant wants to participate in one of these activities, there will be an additional charge of $50 and the participant must meet all qualifications set by the professional outfitters. There will be a limited capacity in these activities. IMPORTANT NOTE: Choosing to participate in one of these OFFSITE OPTIONAL activities does not replace the one CURRICULUM activity choice. The participant will still be able to choose one onsite CURRICULUM activity.

Gear and Clothing Labels- Highly Recommended

If you need great labels for your gear and clothing I recommend Name Bubbles. Go to our troop web page at http://troop1525.webs.com/ and then follow the link under “Equipment Labels”. I use the camp labels under value pack on the Name Bubbles page. You can include name, our unit number and a phone number on most of the labels. I have heavy use stuff with labels on them for over 3 years. (If you access it from our page, we get a small reward.)
