Troop 1525 Website

We now have a Troop 1525 website. It is at www.troop1525.org but you need an invite to view it. Invitations were sent to everyone on January 11, 2010 but if you did not get it, email [email protected] and ask for an invite to the website. We can add as much functionality to the website as we need. For now, it has newsletters posted, a discussion board, contact information and that is about it. More will be added as we go. A calendar is under construction. If you find a good link that will help others related to the Jambo, send it to me and I will post it.

East Texas Area Council Jamboree Council Strip is coming

I can’t show you the entire strip yet, but I managed to capture a partial picture of a secret prototype. Details are coming soon so stay tuned. We will have two versions. One for members of the council contingent units and one for other members of the East Texas Area Council. You can buy extras and will be able to use that strip as a “trader” if you want. If you did not know, patch trading is sort of a big deal at the Jamboree. It is BSA policy that scouts trade patches with scouts and adults trade with adults. That prevents the sneaky scouts from taking advantage of a clueless adult.

Troop member spotlight

Since we will not have much time before the Jamboree to get to know each other, a member of our Troop will be featured in each newsletter.

The spotlight will shine on Colbert Sheard first. Colbert is a member of Troop 518 in Lufkin, Texas and attends Hudson High School. Colbert will be the Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 1525. Colbert has been active in Troop 518 for over six years and also serves as the Tall Timbers Order of the Arrow Chapter Chief.

Colbert likes just about all outdoor activities including camping and hunting. He also likes working on cars and is currently restoring an old Chevy truck. Colbert just completed his first semester of dual enrollment college courses that he is taking while in High School from Angelina College. In his spare time you might spot him running the roads of Angelina county on his motorcycle.

Colbert is planning his second trip to Sea Base in the Florida Keys this summer. He went to Philmont in 2009 on an OA Trail Crew. The experience was a lot of work, but was a “trip of a lifetime.”

Featured activity

While we have many activities planned for the trip to and from the Jamboree, one fun filled day will be spent at Kings Dominion Amusement Park (www.kingsdominion.com) You can be one of the first in the country to drop 300 feet and go 90 miles per hour on the Intimidator Roller Coaster (www.intimidator305.com) and if that is not enough several other coasters are waiting to be conquered including the Anaconda, the Volcano, Shockwave, Rebel Yell Wooden rollercoaster, the Hurler, and the Grizzly. If that is not your thing they also have a water park.

Payments

Don’t forget to send in your January Jambo payment if you have not already done it. We only have about 4 more months to get paid up in total for the Jamboree, so try to stay on target so you will not have a big payment in April. You can either drop your payment off at the council service center in Tyler or mail it in (East Texas Area Council Jamboree Payment, ‏1331 E 5th St, Tyler, TX 75701-3415‏ ).

Next Jamboree Event

We will be having a Jamboree Troop 1525 meeting on February 28th in Nacogdoches from 3 to 5 PM. It will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the Margill Center. In addition to some troop activities we will divide into patrols, pick patrol names, and some other patrol functions.

Jamboree Gear

If your troop is getting ready to purchase any type of camping gear that they might be willing to share with the Jamboree troop we are still in the process of lining up cooking and camping supplies. In the past some of the larger troops have bought things like cook kits, stoves or coolers and let the Jamboree members use them for a week before returning them to the unit. If your unit might be willing to do this please contact Rory Hassell at 936-208-2248.

Happy New Years Jamboree Troop 1525,

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a happy New Year.

We will not have a Jamboree meeting in January, instead we will have a Troop 1525 meeting on Sunday February 28th at 3:00 PM at the Margill Center at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nacogdoches, Texas. If you know you have a conflict please let me know, but I hope the majority of the participants can attend. You can search the following address for directions on-line:

Sacred Heart Catholic Church

2508 Appleby Sand Road

Nacogdoches, TX 75965-3632

The meeting should be over by 5:00. Parents should feel free to come and listen to what is going on and we will probably have some things that they can help do during the meeting. We will form patrols and go over what you need to know to get ready for the May shakedown campout at Camp Pirtle. You should come in your scout uniform.

Just as a reminder, this is a new month, so don’t forget that if you are making payments, the next one is due. By the end of January, you should have paid about $1500. If you are having problems with the payment schedule please let me or Jeff Jones know as soon as possible.

You also need to start collecting things for Jamboree. If you don’t have a uniforms, good rain gear or a compact cot you should start getting things together. If you have questions about the gear list either email me or write them down and bring your question to the February meeting.

In each update I plan on sharing a website or some information that you might find interesting related to our trip. The first one is the web page for Arlington National Cemetery. It is http://www.arlingtoncemetery.org/. We will visit Arlington and participate in laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

If you have a buddy going to the Jamboree, please check with him and make sure that he got this email and read it.

See you in February,

Matt Lindsey

Mid December Newletter

Posted by Matthew Lindsey on January 11, 2010 at 10:31 AM Comments comments (0)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Jambo Troop 1525 members,

As the end of 2009 approaches we are about 220 days away from the start of the Jamboree. If you have not checked out the Jambo web page, I encourage you to get familiar with it. Take a look at http://www.bsajamboree.org/ because it is filled with great Jambo information.

Please keep two Sunday afternoons open. We will have a Troop 1525 meeting on either February 21st or February 28th depending on the availability of our location. I am working on getting a place set up for a meeting between 2:30 and 4:30 on one of the days. As soon as I have it confirmed, I will send out the word.

If you are making payments for Jamboree, you are past the half way point. By now, you should have paid the $100 deposit and four $300 payments (September, October, November and December) for a total of $1300. If for some reason, you are not able to stay on schedule, please let me know what your plan is so I don’t have to call and bug you about it.

We are putting the final touches on the Washington DC itinerary and I hope to have that out to you early in 2010, but it is shaping up nicely.

You should be getting some information from National, including health forms, very soon. The health form you get is bar coded for you and you alone, so it will be important to keep up with it.

As always, if you have any questions, you can contact me anytime.
